The Hoyo de Monterrey Monterreyes No.4 joins the impressive list of previous vitolas selected to represent the brand for the prestigious Habanos Edición Limitada series. The last one was ten years ago in 2013 when the Grand Epicure was released, a cigar that still has an ardent following today and one that always attracts eye catching prices at auction.

Delayed from 2021, the Monterreyes No.4 is a Maravillas No.4 size 5 3⁄4” (145mm) x 55 ring gauge and is entirely new to the Habanos portfolio.

As with all Edición Limitadas since 2007, the tobacco used to make this cigar has been aged for a minimum of two years. This helps to create a more rounded and approachable flavour profile. The darker wrapper also provides a hint of sweetness that works exceptionally well with Hoyo de Monterrey’s distinct light flavoured blend.

These cigars are presented in a varnished Slide Lid Box of ten and have been made entirely by hand using long filler tobaccos sourced from Vuelta Abajo in the Pinar del Rio region of Cuba.

Hoyo de Monterrey is the most popular brand within the light flavour category, outlined by Habanos S. A. The standard Hoyo de Monterrey line is typified by a delicate, cedar taste that remains light enough for inexperienced smokers, while offering enough elegance and layering of flavours to keep aficionados satisfied.

Min Ron NEE in his 2003 tome ‘An Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Post-Revolution Havana Cigars’ says Hoyo de Monterrey cigars are ‘characterised by their soft, sweet style. The tobacco blend is creamy sweet, mild and aromatic’.

The extra age that the tobacco has been through before use should serve to quell some of the livelier, ‘greener’ elements of this young cigar’s character, while allowing many of the more subtle floral tones to come to the fore. Likewise, the wide gauge of the cigar should provide a slow, cool and voluminous smoke – the ideal foil for this nuanced blend of leaves. However, the thick maduro wrapper adds notes of coffee and dark chocolate to the palate.

This is the eighth Hoyo de Monterrey Edición Limitada. The last one was ten years ago, in 2013, when the Grand Epicure was released. A cigar that still has an ardent following, and one that always attracts eye catching prices at auction. There seems to be no reason that this latest edition cannot follow the same path.
